Experience
During the whole journey of the Global Learning Medallion, I participate in different activities to earn points up to a total of 20 points. Here are the most relevant experiences.
My first activity was the International Buddy Program organized by the office of Global First Year, which helps students during their first year at FIU. Given that I am an international student, I was thrilled to participate in this activity, which was a semester-long. We were randomly assigned with one or up to two new students. We would get together once a week, and once per month, we would go all together to an activity organized by the Global First Year office. I had the pleasure of sharing this experience with a new South African student. I was so excited when telling him all the activities that FIU offers, as well as the many pieces of advice I wished I could have had when I arrived. It was a touching and engaging activity for me, which gave me 5 points towards my GLM.
During one whole day, I participate as a volunteer for Reaching U, an organization based in Uruguay. They get amazing objects to auction, like soccer jerseys signed by full teams, sculptures from relevant artists from Uruguay and Argentina, as well as donations from many corporations across the world for the pure and soul project of developing the education in Uruguay. I worked in many areas, like going to tables and ask for donations, ticket admission at the door, media display, within others. It was a hard day, but the satisfaction of helping was priceless.Â
Another activity that I did during my journey at FIU was the National Society for Leadership and Success. The NSLS is a society that teaches you how to become a better person, more knowledgeable, and confident. We did a lot of activities during a year, with speaker broadcast from relevant figures like Anderson Cooper and Richard Branson. Overall, it is helpful to add that certificate to my CV and to relate it with my GLM experience.Â
On February 5th, 2020, I went to a Post Grad life talk. Given that this is my last semester, I am nervous and anxious about the future. In this talk, I gained confidence in myself and my future, my possible outcomes, and career paths. It was encouraging and empowering to participate in this talk that if it were not for the GLM program, I would probably not have gone there.Â
The last experience I would like to share is about someone that came to FIU for a discussion about democracy and the future of democracy within the American continent. Luis Almagro, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States, came to FIU to discuss those points. After the talk, he kind of run away from the media to an upper level in the Business building at FIU. I followed him with my friend and talked with him for a while. Given that he is from Uruguay, we drank mate together and talked about life. I even gave him my CV for future opportunities, and lastly, he gave me his phone number to keep in touch. That was another encouraging day, not only in my life but also for my future. Nowadays, after my graduation, I am going for a summer internship at the OAS, where I wish to share another mate in Washington DC with Luis Almagro.
